“My Afghan Story“ Photo Exhibition
First Sergeant Velimir Bešić, an aircraft technician of the Transport Helicopter Squadron of the 93rd Base of the Croatian Air Force and Air Defence, had his solo photo exhibition “My Afghan Story“ opened in the Split Photo Club Gallery on 3rd September 2015.
The photos were taken during the term served in ISAF as the member of the Croatian Air Advisory Team in 2013. The majority of the exhibits are aerial photos depicting the local scenery and people.
Stipe Božić (the famous Croatian alpinist), underlined that the author offered a unique bird-eye view of Afghanistan and the life of its people. Despite our perception, the local people are happy, which Velimir Bešić noticed right during his deployment in Afghanistan and did evoke the beauty and the diversity of the country.
First Sergeant Bešić said not many soldiers deployed to Afghanistan arrived without prejudice and returned full of pleasant and lasting impressions.
Afghanistan is a country full of contrasts, where you come across doorless mud huts and villas with swimming pools. But I never encountered jealousyamong the people, who lived their own lives instead. That was very inspiring for me and I took the opportunity to record a number of spots and people, telling a story about Afghanistan, the country which inevitably conquers you and finds a place in your heart“, said 1SG Bešić.
First Sergeant Bešić has practiced photography for over 20 years, and the largest part of his photos are from birds. He has already presented his photos in a number of exhibitions as member of the Split Photo Club, namely ”Datinski koluri ”in Dubrovnik 2011, “Vinkovci Photo Exhibition“ in Vinkovci, 2013 . He won the second award of the jury at the Photo Contest of UNDP Croatia and the first award in the landscape photo category at the Split Photo Club Exhibition in 2013. He also displayed with the artist members of the Croatian Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces in the MoD’s Gallery “Zvonimir“.
